How long can parents claim child benefits after their child finishes school?

Completion of Primary School

Just like the child tax bonus, child benefits are paid until the end of compulsory school attendance.

Please note that school holidays are part of the school year, during which parents are still entitled to receive child benefits.

Completion of Secondary School (Full-Time)

Here are the possible scenarios – which one applies to you?

  1. The student successfully completed secondary school and is not continuing studies
The parent may claim child benefits for the last time for August 2025.
If the child graduates in a rescheduled exam, the benefit is still paid for the last time in August!
  2. The student successfully completed secondary school and is continuing full-time university studies
The parent may continue receiving the child benefit, provided enrolment takes place by October 31, 2025.

⚠️ Attention: If the enrolment is between November 1 and December 31, 2025, the benefit is paid for the last time for August 2025 and will resume in the month the university enrolment occurs.

  1. The student successfully completed secondary school and is continuing part-time university studies
The parent may claim child benefits for the last time for August 2025.

Completion of First-Level University Studies

If the student does not continue to a second level, child benefits are paid for the last time in the month in which the student passes the final state exam.

If continuing to a second level, benefits depend on the enrolment date.
